im sure somebody out there will not crank out some time today a blog entry about "Ka Bel's" death.. many would think that a blog entry like this will be boring and full of nonsense.

the death of a militant labor leader is a shock especially to those who share the same principles as Ka bel. as a brave militant leader, this is not the kind of death he hoped for. it is ironic that a fighter would leave this world in a simple accidental fall from the roof of his house while doing some minor repairs.

i am keeping my fingers crossed that his untimely demise would not be the end of what we are fighter for. instead, let this be the avenue of the faster passage of legislation bills that workers and the oppressed are DYING to have.

Ka Bel's death is an irreparable loss not only to the working class movement but to every Filipino yearning for genuine social change. He was a tower of a man, a pillar of strength for the progressive people's movement. His name has become synonymous to the militant labor movement.
Indeed, Ka Bel's leadership in the progressive people's movement extended beyond our shores. At the time of his death, he was the Chairperson of the International Coordinating Group of the International League of People's Struggle (ILPS), an anti-imperialist and democratic formation of people's movements from more than 30 countries.
In Congress, Ka Bel proved his mettle as a genuine representative of the marginalized and oppressed, representing Bayan Muna in 2001-2003 and later, Partido Anakpawis. His voice was a voice of conscience and defiance to the well-entrenched, reactionary interests dominating thehalls and corridors of power.
This afternoon, we were expecting Ka Bel to join us in filing a bill to remove the Value Added Tax on power. We shall push through with the filing of the bill and include Ka Bel's name as a co-author in honor of his dedication to the struggles of our oppressed and marginalized people.
In his death, Ka Bel now joins Crisanto Evangelista, Ka Bert Olalia and Ka Lando Olalia in that list of great leaders of the revolutionary working class movement. We shall miss Ka Bel terribly. But his legacy of struggle continues.

While doing some research on the life of Crispin Beltran, i learned that he is from Bacacay Albay. Now, that makes me even prouder..

I am a frustrated traveler. Meeting new faces in unfamiliar places is one way of easing stress. Also, I love to appreciate the spellbinding spots of the different places I come to visit. There are so many interesting places I’d like to visit and I want to explore them all. But my recent trip to a certain resort is a great dismay.

Friday night, I went to bed early since I was too excited on this trip and this is my chance to once again commune with nature. In the morning, I immediately packed my needed clothes and other travel necessities and met with my friends. The whole trip was both tiring and fun. It took us more than an hour to reach the destination. During our ride, I had fun appreciating the scenic landscape of the place. So I was hoping that the resort is wonderful enough to compensate for the long hours of travel.

After an hour, we reached the resort. To my great dismay, the resort is now what I’ve envisioned. I wanted to ride with the large crashing waves but all I see is brown water. Not a fun sight to behold, eh? I didn’t even took lots of pictures because it is so difficult to find a good subject..hehe.. The food is not bad, but it was not sumptuous enough to enjoy. While we were eating, I was thinking of what my mother had prepared back home. My mom loves to cook and she makes it a point to cook something special on weekends. And lastly, the accommodation was horrible. The staffs were not pleasant. I guess they are not used to seeing mortals in their resort..hehe

To sum it up, this is the trip that would never make it to my most-wanted trip list. This will be lesson learned for me.. This is post is originally intended to salute the mother’s around the world. But like any other situations, plans change. But I’m sure mothers out there especially my mom would understand if this post is not for them. This concerns their children.. us.. After all, it is the welfare of their children that they are always after. I know what is inside the hearts of every mom.. that is to protect their children in every possible way. I too, would soon have children and build my own family.. I want them to stay in a secured, peaceful and of course, progressive place.. a place that is so much different to where I dwell now.

For more than 23 years, I have been living in the 3rd (or 4th) class municipality of the first district of Albay—Sto. Domingo. A place that I endlessly brag to my schoolmates.. Once hailed as the cleanest and greenest municipality of Albay for years, and its crystallized beaches, what more could you ask for? It is also the warm and accommodating trait of the Domingueños that make me proud.

But now, I have a totally different opinion. The once proud dweller of the place is now ashamed to what it has become. The never-ending issues on Sto. Domingo is one reason. Yes, politics have made our once peaceful town a harrowing place. Issues on governance and other unscrupulous transactions abound the airwaves. It seems the radio commentators have so much to say but when they try to investigate, our people here is afraid to be involve. Afraid that their name will be dragged. Afraid they will expose the anomalous activities of the town’s most powerful man..

Some would even say that they are already contended in his governance. Look at the park.. People admire our “beautiful” town. Yes, it may look beautiful on the outside.. but on the inside are the cries yearning for help against a dictatorial rule.

Apathy is the main reason why we are trapped in this situation. This is the society’s most dreaded disease.. worse than aids or cancer. It may not kill you but will eat and consume your very being. It would lead to a great slumber and when you wake up, everything is different. Far from the place and situation where your children and future generations can enjoy.

Yes, I tend to be apathetic at one point. But everything has its end… and this is the start when I want to reach out to small people and encourage them to be critical. Speak when you sense that something is wrong. Act when you need to..

At first I was hesitant to watch Gossip Girl then one night I gave it a try. Then I finally found myself hooked in this teen series. It is actually a welcome deviation to the usual fantaseryes I usually see in Philippine television. The plot may be ordinary as it tackles the lifestyle of rich teenagers, where treachery and jealousy and scandals prevail.

Masks are made to hide the fears from the past, and not let the world to see of what a shameful creature you are. The use of masks is clearly described in the infamous "Phantom of the Opera." In the story, Erik, the main character wears a white mask to hide his scornful appearance caused by a terrible accident. But in other stories, Erick was born deformed.

But today, you don't have to wear a mask to hide your appearance. This has become symbolic when you want to hide something from your past.. or you want to cover up your true feelings. then you just pretend that it was never there and ignore it.

Even artists today associate masks in their music. The most potent lines on the mask is a line from "Everybody's Fool" by Evanescence. It says,

“Without the mask, where will you hide? Can’t find yourself, lost in your lie. I know the truth now, I know who you are, and I don’t love you anymore.”

Masks can even help us fool someone and let them think we're perfect. Hiding behind the mask means not being found out, or so we think. It means we don’t have to face ourselves, we don’t have to look at our mistakes, and neither will anyone else. What everyone doesn’t know can’t hurt them right? What everyone doesn’t know can ultimately hurt you, if not physically then emotionally and mentally.

Hiding behind a fake face is nothing but dangerous in the end, but hiding behind the mask means power. It means overcoming everything that you might have done wrong. Or does it? Is a mask truly a smart thing to do, even though we all do it? I suppose it’s only up to you to decide.

Is it also part of the so-called life to experience confusion? Right now I am torn between two worlds. On one side, there is a life with balance—with everything falling into place. But on the other side, there is life that is full of zest and fun, where you can easily break free from your comfort zone. This other side of life is what I am hungry for. A life that echoes with all that rhymes with buoyancy.. the flamboyant side of existence where you can do whatever you wish for.

I want to defy convention and come out of my shell… breathe life with so much passion and eagerness.. and leave behind the society’s stiff rules. I want to have a life at my own pace, create new excitement and discoveries… and never compromise with what is set as the standard on how we act or talk. Fly with wings of passion and leave reason on the dust. To summarize it all, I want to LIVE…

The things I want to try out are not beyond reach. My parents say that I am born for bigger and greater things.. I just hope that I can live up to that expectation. From now on, I would instill in my mind that I am what I am and nobody can rob me of my dreams. I will reach and strive hard to those dreams and won’t let anyone trample it.

• The blatant and unabashed misuseof the administration machinery,including the Department of Justice,the Philippine National Police, theArmed Forces of the Philippines andother agencies of government, toconspire in the further deception ofthe people and betrayal of public trust.

The government has lost its moralascendancy to govern due to the longlist of scandals, electoral fraud andcorruption issues that have mired itsrule. The Arroyo administration haslong ceased to perform as a role modelgovernment for the youth. It hascaused the widespread disillusionmentamong young people and have been adisappointment to the youth's desireto instill reforms in government.

We call on the government of Mrs.Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to stop efforts to cover-up the truth and beaccountable for its immoral andcorrupt acts. The government'sdesperate efforts to continuouslycling to power have sown deep socialdiscontent and division among the people.

Bittersweet victory

As I’ve said in my other (secret) blog.. solitary confinement have helped my reflect on life’s greatest lessons. I was at my weakest and saddest point that time though it had helped me ponder on my flaws and the pains I have caused to the dearest persons in my life—my family and my significant other…but the good thing is I am determined to redeem myself from the sins and shortcomings I have committed.

The greatest lesson I learned so far is to love unconditionally. Second is being true to myself even if it could mean hurting someone close to you.. and lastly, being selfless… I am proud to say that I was once broken but I victoriously emerged as a whole being despite the scars..

However, one significant event happened months before my college graduation. As usual, that day turned out to be a series of unfortunate events. Thesis defense, final examination, my responsibilities as a CSC treasurer and my responsibilities as a SAMASA member are happening all at once. And suddenly, my famous line was once again heard by my friends.

But one person, who is also part of the organization I am in, does not like what he heard. He approached me and gave me a litany of words.. according to him I should not be complaining on my life’s fate..

I’ve been complaining on my hectic school load when in fact I should be lucky that I was able to go to a good school when kids who at an early age started working just to have food on their plate.

I should be lucky that I have a roof that can serve as my shelter when many street children have the sky as their roof and stars as their light…..

i should be lucky that i can read and write when many of our youth do not even know the A-B-C…

I may not get all that I want but I have the little things that truly matters.. I have my “rich” family, my “genuine” friends, and I have a decent house, my work and my significant other..

that simple conversation really caught me off-guard. and made me realize my life’s blessings. Because of that “the life is full of bullshit” line is entirely out of my system.

Local bands are the ones that dominate the Filipino music scene today. The band, composed of the vocalists, has their own schtick of expressing their lyrics, strumming guitars and the chords, executing different genre to their every songs—has become the major addiction that mostly influence our youth today.

However, as more and more bands emerge in the industry and when you try to listen to their songs, something is actually missing.. as my friend puts it “I can’t listen to a Filipino band without thinking that they’re just jerking their audience off, with motherhood statement lyrics about love and their elementary rhyming. “

I am quite lucky to have listened to the songs played by the bands who emerge in the ‘90s. as many would agree, they have made a great contribution to Filipino rock. One important thing that separates the bands of before from the Filipino bands of today is the social commentary intertwined in the lyrics of their songs. The lyrics of the songs are more socially aware and political. Does this means that the bands of before care more about the society? Or at least they try to reach to the “masa” by putting lines in the songs that would closely associate to them.

When you look at the bands of today, they all carry the same formula: cute band members, branded clothes, coñotic English language, and songs about love or about a girl. Another prevalent situation in the Filipino music industry and all can agree with me is that bands of today made revivals. But instead of reliving the songs, some remakes end up as a catastrophe. I wonder how the bands in the next generations would fare.. would they be better or even worse??

I guess composers have lost their creative juices and all they can ever think of is profit..

Someone reminded me--that people change. It depends whether you see this statement as a glass half-full or half-empty but because I'm on the sunnier side of the skies, I look at this with childlike hope. Despite my age.

People change and thank God for that. There is hope, eh? Not just for the peso (now at P40 - $1) but for them individuals whom you swore were more thick-faced and stubborn than your kalyo. Paradigm shifts are always refreshing and conducive to curing depression. And when you've decided to believe that people can/do/will change, the world is suddenly a better place.

I can attest to this. Having faith in people really does wonders. And this paradigm shift, this turnaround from cynicism and world-weariness doesn't really talk much about them but it certainly speaks volumes about you. Try it, if you must.

But we go on or the world leaves us.

Hope isn't overrated, a claim I'll always stick to. Because people change--most of the time, for the better or even the best--I am again inspired. To spread my wings, to love and be loved, to run and jump and flick popcorn in the air and catch it in my mouth, to be hurt, to hear mean but honest things said to me, to tread uncharted territory and claim it as mine, to stick my head out and say hello to strangers and strangeness. LEGAZPI CITY – A multimillion-peso facility to deliver clean water from a river to more than 17,000 households in Legazpi City may be a superb idea, but not so for the poor who cannot afford to pay for it.

Philippine Hydro (Phil-Hydro) Inc., which will undertake the P300-million bulk water project for the government-owned Legazpi City Water District (LCWD), will charge consumers P13.50 per cubic meter, or an increase of almost half of the present rate.

This would mean a jump of P198 this year up to 2009 in the existing monthly minimum rate of P135 for a consumption of not more than 10 cubic meters. More increases are scheduled until 2015, when the rate will be pegged at P238.

According to LCWD officials, the rate increases are necessary if the consumers want a quality and stable supply of water.

Water from river

Under the new system called “High-rate Permanent Media Filtration Technology,” water will be tapped from the Yawa River, an 11-kilometer channel where volcanic gullies converge and extend up to the Albay Gulf, instead of from springs around Mayon Volcano.

“Water coming from the Yawa River will pass through embedded perforated pipes that shall serve as a natural filtration system. The new system operates modern equipment that will ensure the required water quality is met before distribution to the public,” says Desiree Michelle Barcelon, LCWD public relations assistant.

She says the spring water is now discolored because of its high iron content. She cited studies conducted by the LCWD and the Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA).

It is reddish and smells like fish—characteristics of water from artesian wells that is not potable—says chemical engineer Junel Borbo, a professor at the Bicol University College of Engineering. At higher levels of contamination, it looks a little slimy, he adds.

Barcelon also cites another study showing a periodic scarcity of water due to climatic and topographical changes commonly affecting springs. For example, the erstwhile popular hot springs in Tiwi town in Albay, home to the Chevron geothermal plant, have already dried up, leading to the closure of many resorts.

Biggest in the country

The new clean water technology is the biggest of its kind in the country and the first to be run by Phil-Hydro, says its chief operating officer, Rolando Mangulabnan. It converts surface water, such as that from rivers, into water of “bottled quality,” he says.

PhilHydro is committed to supply at least 20,000 cubic meters of water per day.

“It will be environment-friendly if we stop drilling holes. Surface water, unlike groundwater, is free from salt intrusion. Nowhere in Metro Manila is this US technology used,” he says.

Water from the rivers can be put to good use before it is flushed out to the sea to mix with salt water, says Mangulabnan, who is an environmental engineer and a former agrarian reform undersecretary.

In opposing the project, the Legazpi City Slumdwellers Federation Inc. (LCSFI) claims that no proper public consultation was held regarding the changes in water supply system and rates. The group has 3,000 members, according to the Community Organization of the Philippines Enterprise (COPE) Foundation.

Together with COPE, the LCSFI plans to file a petition to the city council asking for a comprehensive investigation of the project.“The rate increase is unjustifiable since many of the people here are in the brink of poverty, especially after the series of calamities that hit the province,” says Numeriano de la Torre, COPE’s assistant regional coordinator. He adds that a rate increase is not a solution for an efficient water service.

But Barcelon says a careful study on the city’s water supply situation was made before the LWUA recommended a “justified” increase. Nine of the city’s 33 villages have less or no supply of water during peak hours, while five still do not have distribution lines, she says.A public hearing was held on Dec. 21 last year to discuss the increase, but only 128 consumers came, she adds.

It was not a public consultation at all, De la Torre says, and the place was not accessible to many people.

According to Barcelon, LWUA representatives were there to listen to the sentiments of the public. “It is only after the public hearing that the LWUA can confirm the increase for implementation. Until now, we are still waiting for the confirmation,” she says.

Gonzalo Gomez, 53, one of the water district subscribers from Barangay Baybay, does not favor the increase. “Due to poverty, no one will be in favor of any increase. Money is hard to earn these days,” he says in the vernacular.

“I will just reinstall our old water pump, if we could no longer pay our water bill.”

IN A NUTSHELL

Youth group launches nationwide signature drive vs. oil price hikes 100,000 signatures vs. $100/barrel in time for energy summit

Youth group Anakbayan today announced that it is set to launch a nationwide signature drive against oil price hikes.

The signature drive was a resolution agreed upon during Anakbayan's recently-concluded National Council meeting held in Baguio City last January 9-12, 2007.

Anakbayan's National Council vowed to gather 100,000 signatures from youth and students nationwide against the onslaught of oil price hikes which has soared to $100 per barrel.

Anakbayan said that it would present the total number of signatures on the last day of the scheduled government-sponsored 4-day energy summit on February 7.

Signatures are expected to barge in from youth and students from different schools, universities and communities in Metro Baguio, Cagayan Valley, Southern Tagalog, Metro Cebu, Metro Davao, Metro Iloilo and Metro Manila.

"We will arrange for a simulateneous press conference on February 7 in these regions to showcase how youth and students are opposed to oil price hikes and the Arroyo administration's lack of will and resolve to stop them," said Anakbayan chairperson Eleanor de Guzman.

Anakbayan's signature campaign encapsulates the three basic demands to "stop oil price hikes, scrap the Oil Deregulation Law and cancel the RVAT on oil products".

"We will present the initial 100,000 signatures on February 7 but will continue to circulate the signature campaign to youth and students until it reaches the 1-million-signature mark before classes end in March," de Guzman said.

Anakbayan is a convenor of all-youth alliance Kabataan Kontra-Kartel.

All I really need to know about how to live and what to do and how to be I learned in kindergarten. Wisdom was not at the top of the graduate school mountain, but there in the sand pile at school.These are the things I learned:

Share everything.

Don't hit people.
Put things back where you found them.

Live a balanced life - learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some.

When you go out in the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands and stick together.
Be aware of wonder. Remember the little seed in the Styrofoam cup: the roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody really knows how or why, but we are all like that.
Goldfish and hamsters and white mice and even the little seed in the Styrofoam cup - they all die. So do we.
And then remember the Dick-and-Jane books and the first word you learned - the biggest word of all - LOOK.

Everything you need to know is in there somewhere. The Golden Rule and love and basic sanitation. Ecology and politics and equality and sane living.

Take any one of those items and extrapolate it into sophisticated adult terms and apply it to your family life or your work or government or your world and it holds true and clear and firm. Think what a better world it would be if we all - the whole world - had cookies and milk at about 3 o'clock in the afternoon and then lay down with our blankies for a nap. Or if all governments had as a basic policy to always put things back where they found them and to clean up their own mess.

And it is still true, no matter how old you are, when you go out in the world, it is best to hold hands and stick together.

National ID System: Bane or Boon?

What is a National ID card? How is it different from other ID cards?

What the ordinary Filipino masses do not realize is that the national ID card is not the ordinary harmless laminated plastic ID card that we receive from schools or employers, that only contains our picture, signature and basic information on ourselves. The National ID card are often called smart cards because it has a microchip that can store huge amount of data about ourselves and can access and be read by computer database networks. It will consolidate all the IDs we have into one- SSS/GSIS, Pag-Ibig, TIN, PhilHealth, Voter’s ID, Driver’s license, PRC, Census’ Population Ref. No., NBI and police clearance, etc.. There will be sharing of information between these agencies. But eventually, since the investment for the information technology infrastructure of the system is huge, the government may also invite the private sector to share the cost, which means they will also have access to it, and such may also become our employment IDs, etc..

3 types of card can be used for the national ID system:

1. Laminated plastic cards with a magnetic strip at the back. This is similar to the cards used in ATM machines and credit cards. On the surface we could see a digital photo of ourselves, a digitalized signature and thumb mark, and most important ourr name and a computerized identification reference number of ourselves. Within the magnetic strip is stored, our other biometric data like height, weight, complexion, address, beneficiaries, income, etc.. This type of media stores lesser amount of data and costs less, which the government might find attractive in the initial phases of implementation. But nevertheless the codes stored in the magnetic media can be used to access databases in remote storage facilities that can read or write enormous amount of data to your records via wired networks, much like a bank’s ATM.

2. Laminated plastic cards with an embedded micro memory chip. The microchip is similar to the sim card we use in mobile phones that can store greater amount of data than that of the magnetic strip. Best example of this is Mercury Drug’s loyalty “Suki” card or National Bookstore’s “Laking National” card that embedded the chips to the card. Compared to the magnetic strip card, the per unit cost is slightly higher but the rewards are it can store your entire curriculum vitae in it, including health records, police records, family history, etc.. The government will only have to procure portable card readers/terminals, instead of investing in wired networked systems to read and update data in the card. Once the technology infrastructure is completed, the government will shift to this for sure.

3. Bio-implantable microchip. It is a tiny microchip, the size of rice, that is simply placed under the skin. It is so designed as to be injected simultaneously with a vaccination or alone. According to a promotion literature, it is ingenious, safe, inexpensive, foolproof and permanent method of identification that can be read from the body via radio waves. This system is said to be made by the Hughes Aircraft Company. In the long term, this may be adopted to prevent card theft.

What are the supposed benefits claimed by the government?

The government claims that the ID system can improve and facilitate the delivery of basic services to the people.

How? Is the ID a magical panacea for removing graft and corruption in the bureaucracy? If they think it is in the ID, then what will be the use of the various “tamper-proof” magnetic stripe ID cards recently issued by the government like the SSS/GSIS ID, Postal ID, Drivers’ license, Voters’ ID, etc.? Are they not enough? Are they mere waste of taxpayers’ money?

Another compelling reason for the national ID, according to the government, is the prevention of crime and terrorism.

Another big HOW? As to intelligence gathering, the current legal procedures are sufficient for law enforcement agencies to obtain evidence from suspected criminals and terrorists by simply asking the courts to issue search warrants, upon presentation of a reasonable and probable cause. They can also subpoena social security records, medical, employment records, etc. in their investigations. Why subject everyone, including the innocent majority (at the expense of a handful of criminals), to surrender their privacy through the ID? Do they want to bypass the courts and the legal procedures to arrest suspected criminals and terrorist without due process, only on the basis of speculative evidence gathered through the transaction trails of the ID?

The international civil society are also of the opinion that should a national ID system existed in the US, it could not have thwarted the September 11 terrorists/hijackers because many of whom reportedly had valid identification documents on them, and were in that country legally. Unless of course, the proponents of the ID have other things in mind to make it work- use of the ID in conjunction with a totalitarian state, where the government dictates to the people what to do and not to do like mindless robots!

What are the dangers-- abuses that can be committed using the ID system?

Hollywood has produced numerous movies highlighting the dangers of allowing the state to invade the privacy of its people through electronic means. Scariest among them were Sandra Bullock’s “The Net” , Will Smith’s “Enemy of the State”, and Schwarzenegger’s “Eraser”.

The Dangers of committing abuses to human dignity and freedom outweighs its supposed benefits. Some of these are enumerated below:

1. High crimes. It can be used by tyrannical rulers or heads of state to oppress certain classes of people who differ from their point of view, ideas, racial origin, religion or simply those whom they consider as threat to their continued rule. Historically, this has already been done.
During World War II, supposedly confidential Census Bureau information in the US was used to identify and imprison Japanese-Americans. Worst was the infamous Third Reich in Nazi Germany which enabled the racial categorization of Jews by requiring them to carry an ID.

2. Discrimination and harassment. Due to lack of privacy, a person can be discriminated both in availing basic services and in dealing with the private sector such as applying for employment, on the bases of racial origin, religion, family background, sexual orientation, political beliefs, history of drug usage, past felony or erroneous or planted record of an imaginary crime you committed.

Best example of this is Winne Monsod’s denial of a visa to the US due to an entry in the database that she’s a “suspicious character” involved in the underground. While US embassy officials explained that was just an error; worst could have happened if she is just an ordinary person.

The people will be faced with a bigger problem if the private sector, like employers, will be allowed to write on the databases and cards. Bad employment records, whether true or imagined, will ruin a person’s career; much more it can harass union members to exchange collective bargaining rights for favorable annotations on the employment records to be imbedded in the card.

3. Kidnapping and blackmailing by “hoodlums in uniform”. Syndicates and corrupt members of the police can easily spot potential kidnap victims by viewing their tax records and where they hang around often. The system could also be used to extort money through blackmailing of one’s “secrets” or through threat of fabricating crimes on your police records.

4. Political vendetta by local officials and “warlords”. It is not uncommon in the Philippines for local government officials to get back at constituents who did not vote for them by denying them of basic services. This can be easily done by browsing who the person voted for through the card.
5. Prejudged and speculative evidence. It was reported that during the 1980s, at the height of the cold war, FBI was getting intelligence info from libraries on people expressing interest on books on Marxism and Eastern Europe! Intellectual curiosity, as well as variation in personal habits will be suppressed for fear of being in the police list of suspected terrorists.

6. Errors of omission and computer glitches. Even innocent data errors, misidentified thumbprints or damaged cards could turn away an individual’s ability to move freely to places, or purchase food, or can even make them unemployable until the government fixed their “files”. Data inaccuracy in police records could pave way to false arrests and detentions.

7. High tech crimes. Criminal syndicates will also go high tech, and might engage in ID card cloning, identity theft or switching of bio-metric data to commit crime undetected.

8. Abuse of the transaction trails by selling them to marketing firms, credit investigators, salesmen, private detectives, etc..

9. Further marginalization of the poor because the authorities can easily assess their financial capability to hire lawyers, in case their database are muddled by mistake or by malicious intention.

10. Apocalyptic thinking. You existence being reduced into numbers and a plastic card- your reference number can be erased or deleted from the computer any time by a “beast”.

actually, i am waging a personal battle of leaving my current job and pursuing a career that has a direct inclination in my Journalism degree. one of the major reasons why i cannot come up with a concrete decision is my doubt in my writing skills. self-confidence is a big issue here. and also, i have been thinking if i will be able to survive if writing in a publication is my way of living. i hope i would be able to make the right decision as soon as possible.

as early as now, there is too much politicking on the 2010 presidential elections.. several names have surfaced as the would-be bets of each political parties. among the presidential bets are: Senate President Manuel Villar, Senator Mar Roxas, Vice-President Noli de Castro, and MMDA Chief Bayani Fernando. these aspiring presidentiables have become household names as their every move is covered by media.

1. Manny Villar (Nacionalista Party)- the rags to riches senator.

"He has been recognized by being cited as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Men in 1986, the Agora Award for Marketing Management in 1989, Most Outstanding CPA by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants in 1990, and Most Outstanding Alumnus in 1991. As a successful businessman, he ventured in the political arena in 1992 and was elected as Congressman representing Las Pinas posting landslide victories. On his third term, he was chosen to be the Speaker of the House of Representatives.In 2001, the national electorate voted him as one of the Senators of the Republic. He now holds the position of Senate President Protempore, the second highest post in the Senate."

2. Mar Roxas (Liberal Party)- whose winning ticket to presidency is broadcast journalist Korina Sanchez.

"He graduated elementary at Ateneo de Manila Grade School in 1970, high school at Ateneo de Manila High School in 1974 and the Wharton School of Economics at the University of Pennsylvania in 1979. Before entering public service, he worked as an investment banker, mobilizing venture capital funds for small and medium enterprises."

3. Noli de Castro - the Vice-President of the Republic and popularly known as "Kabayan Noli"

As a senator, De Castro authored Senate Bill No. 2029 or the "Local Government Transparency Act" which aimed to end corruption through transparency measures in the local government units.

in the early years, Roman canditates used to wear white gowns to signify their clean intention for running in office. but now, election in the Philippines is now synonymous to cheating, violence and vote buying. these, all in the name of power and greed.

i discovered a very helpful site where you can edit all your pictures the professional way. i think adobe photoshop is not user-friendly to users like me hence i find LunaPic Online Photo Editor really interesting. thanks to Twinx for sharing me this site. all day, i find joy in editing all the pictures stored in my pc and because of this i also had the chance to change the look of my blog and make it more personalized and appealing, ayt? but despite my latest onlinea addiction, i still managed to accomplish my quota for today in case my TL is reading this blog.

Reunited

back in college, i belong to a group of five girls. These girls (che, dv, juvs and dm) became my constant companion and groupmates in school. each time the class is required to form a group for a certain project or class activity, expect the five of us to be in the same group. we also love to travel alot. we went to baguio together, went shopping to manila, ate isaw near Kalayaan dorm and joined the colorful celebration of Pahiyas in Quezon. each of us has different personalities and that fact made us even closer to each other. dm is the kikay type; che, who spends more of her time in UNIBE since she used to be the EIC; dv, the religious one and juvy, the serious type. and me? the amazona..haha.

though, it is normal for a group to have misunderstandings, i am proud to say that we have withstood all the pety and major isuues we had. especially my case with dm, we have fought over the most trivial things but look at us now, we still remain to be very good friends.

however, after college graduation, putting the group together is next to impossible since che, dv, and juvs had to go to Manila to try their luck in the metropolis. just last year, October 18 to be exact, un unexpected thing happened. juvy, who has been battling cancer for a long time has passed away. and on december, dv went out of the country to look for greener pastures. so you see, the group of five beautiful girls (ehem) will never be complete again. no more hearty laughs and endless discussions about anyhing..

surprisingly, che texted me last sunday that she's on her way to Tabaco because she's planning to spend her New Year in Catanduanes. and i hurriedly prepared myself to meet a very good friend.

Papadom and Budoy are the brainchilds of a fantastically eclectic, unapologetically Pinoy album that is sure to be a hit among reggae lovers in the Philippines.

Island Riddims is an album compilation that brings together some of the best reggae bands and musicians in the country. Among the selection of songs in this album, i particularly love the song My Beautiful Eyesore by Gaucho. Since i am very particular with the lyrics, Beautiful Eyesore really catches my attention. and I also have to credit the talent of the band itself. May this compilation be way of making the reggae scene flourish all over the islands.

Nothing but clouds and wind and rain for tonight. Terrific weather, the romantics say. But why am I feeling weird? Nostalgia creeps in as I listened to the rain pouring on the roof last night. I made a trip down the memory lane with the “I’m not supposed to love you anymore” as the background.. what a perfect combination! The perfect song + rain can be equated to what I really feel inside.

There are times when I want to go home late and dead tired so when I arrive home, I could just sleep and not think of all the negative things that happened a few days back. I want to be in the company of my friends so that even for just a single moment I could forget everything. But in the end, it is just me in my bedroom. No laughter of my friends to be heard and back again to the sad reality: where I am alone and the stage of confusion. I want to talk but to whose ears? Everybody seems to be holiday-happy on the other side of the fence. Yes, I made a lot of wrong of things.. but I don’t deserve this, your silence is a killer. I would rather hear hurtful words than your silence.. I know we’re both hurting but at least be man enough to face me.

I learned that you can never fix things that are already broken.. I know I have my great share in this problem but I expected your full understanding. I thought you were someone who would stick with me no matter what.. but I was dead wrong..

Ok, cut! Good take! Enough of this and move on… this would be the last time I would write on something so absurd..

I first wrote a feature story on husband battery when i was in second year college. we were required to write a feature article on the news that we wrote.. since my news has something to do with a battered husband in tabaco city i then decided to dig a little deeper on the topic of husband battery.

i find it hard to believe at first since women are the most common victims of this kind of abuse and it goes against the stereotype of the passive and helpless female. and even those who are liberated enough would find it hard to imagine that such occurence is rampant in the society. one reason could be that women are considered as the "weaker sex" due to sex roles. on the other hand, men are defined in the socirty as the more sturdy and self-reliant. there are even studies that revealed "that the number of murders of women by men (17.5% of total homicides) was about the same as the number of murders of men by women (16.4% of total homicides). This study (Curtis 1974), however, showed that men were three times as likely to assault women as vice-versa. These statistics came from police records."

also, in the early days a battered husband was made was made to "wear an outlandish outfit and ride backwards around the village on a donkey." this may hurt the ego of some men but for they can be ridiculed by the society. but we have to face the reality that any form of violence can happen to anyone irregardless of sex.

Tribute to Workers

With the mounting violence in the country, the Philippines also has had the highest unemployment rate in Southeast Asia for the past years. There has been a sharp rise of unemployment in the Philippines. This only shows that there are not enough jobs that can be offered to fresh graduates. Job trends indicate that an approximate of five to ten percent of each graduating class would surely land jobs and most of them are not even under the line of study or are underemployed.

While the surging population and the inability of the government to create employment continue to plague the labor sector, there appears to be a structural problem in the system. One of the reasons in the worsening unemployment of the country is the incongruity between the training of fresh graduates and the job opportunities that are available in the market. The education sector churns out thousands of liberal arts and education graduates, yet only a few of them can make it in their desired jobs. Not for the reason that their courses are unnecessary but because there are not too many positions that are able to absorb them. Also, the quality of graduates the education sector produces is also being questioned. That is why employers tend to be selective in hiring job seekers. There are certain companies that prefer applicants who are graduates of well-known universities such as University of the Philippines, De LaSalle University and Ateneo de Manila University.

Call centers have been the refuge of job seekers. The proliferation of call centers has lured the fresh graduates of its relatively good pay. Call center industry is not a long-term solution to the country’s increasing unemployment rate. The US, where most of these companies are based, are now implementing stricter laws on outsourced services to secure also the increasing unemployment in their country. India is threatening the position to become the call center hub with its cheaper labor force.

A huge amount of Filipinos leaving their family behind and deciding to work abroad is also rampant. Every year, an exodus of Filipinos settle for overseas work notwithstanding the risks entailed. Since the mid-1970s, the number of Filipinos going abroad for employment has been steadily increasing. By the 1990s, half a million Filipino workers leave annually to over 150 destinations. A significant percent of Filipino professionals are working overseas as doctors, nurses, scientists, computer and information specialists, economists and educators; nurses and domestic helpers are also in demand abroad.
The government must make drastic thinking and planning to productively utilize the county’s idle manpower. The expertise of new graduates should be properly harnessed and used if the government is really serious in its bid for national, economic, and social development.

Another pressing issue that involves the workers is the very low salary. It can be noted that the prices of basic goods and services have started to escalate while the very low salary of workers remain unchanged. At present, Metro Manila minimum wage workers earn P362 daily. With the great disparity between wages and cost of living, workers cannot cope with increasing cost of public utilities, basic goods and services.

The struggle for qualitative reform in social changes justifies the unwavering commitment of workers to end oppression and exploitation in the whole society.

Responsible Adult (wishful thinking)

finally, i am determined in handling my finances the mature and responsible way. i noticed that after more than a year of working my butt off in the office, my savings account remains stagnant. and the sad part is, one of my bank accounts is already closed. only shows how responsible i am. haha! but to end the year and face the new year right, i have finally decided to open another bank account and this is where all my hard-earned money will go.

will this also be my subconscious way of finally facing a new chapter of my life? haha.. i don't think so...

No Christmas Gift For Me?

After too much pondering of the pros and cons, I finally decided to buy a sony cybershot camera.. woohoo! This would also serve as gift for my self this Christmas. After a whole year of working, I definitely deserve a reward. There are many memories that my mind cannot keep so I would like them to be captured by my dependable camera. Also, I would like to learn photo manipulation, which my college friend Mark is good at. I keep visiting deviantart and I envy the beautiful pictures there. Such a work of art.

I also need to have an Adobe photoshop software so I can edit my pictures and turn them into something that could captivate ones eyes.. These thoughts only make me more excited so expect this blog to be filled with pictures of my fond memories with people I truly treasure.

Baptism of Fire

this is not actually my first attempt in blogging since i used to have a previous account here at blogger but out of the blue and (mostly because of my implusive nature) i decided to erase my first blog. then i settled for a multiply account which i hardly maintain because of my loads of work. what prompted me to go back here is Tala who keeps on urging me to join the growing bandwagon here in our office: blogging.
